17 Weird Things That Happened In “Mean Girls” That Were Never Addressed

How the heck did Cady get in trouble for the whole Burn Book when she was the new kid?

Mean Girls is an undeniably iconic movie. If you’re anything like me, it’s one of your favorites! But while it gave us tons of laughs and iconic quotes, there are some things in that movie that make literally no sense. Here are a few of them:

Paramount Pictures

1. Cady always explained that she moved to the US from Africa, but that’s a whole continent! Where in Africa did she move from?

Paramount Pictures

2. Also, how does she have a perfect American accent?

Paramount Pictures

3. What exactly does “fetch” mean?

Paramount Pictures

I know Gretchen said it’s British slang, but what exactly for? You can’t make fetch happen if nobody knows what it means, Gretchen!

4. How did the Plastics not get dress code violations every day?

Paramount Pictures

While those skirts are cute, they definitely don’t pass the fingertip test.

5. Why would Gretchen be sitting with the Art Freaks — aka Janis and Damien — if she weren’t with the Plastics?

Paramount Pictures

Is Gretchen also an artist? Because if so, I wanna see it! But if she’s not, why them? It seems like such a random group for her to spend lunch with — especially given Regina’s history with Janis — when she could sit literally anywhere else.

6. What’s up with the confessionals?

Paramount Pictures

There are two confessional montages throughout the movie where the students break the fourth wall, and I’ve always wondered why. It gives me major ~reality TV vibes~ and the quotes are *chef’s kiss*, but it’s so different from the rest of the movie.

7. You mean to tell me the girls with countless rules about what they can and can’t wear didn’t talk once about their Halloween costumes?

Paramount Pictures

C’mon, they practically have a dress code between them at school! I’m sure they have Halloween costume rules, too. Plus, Regina would 100% make sure nobody else even thought about wearing the same costume she wore.

8. Why in the world did Karen have a thing for her cousin?

Paramount Pictures

9. Was middle school Janis a Plastic?

Paramount Pictures

The only thing we really know about Janis and Regina’s friendship is ~the incident~ and that she choreographed the “Jingle Bell Rock” dance. I can’t imagine a world where movie Janis choreographed that dance, tbh. It seems so out of character! Regina and Janis are such opposites, what were they like when they were friends? Was Janis like Regina and she changed? Was Regina a nice girl who got obsessed with popularity? This friendship needs explaining!

10. If Cady’s mom used to feed Kälteen bars to the kids in Africa to help them gain weight, why did they bring so many of them to the US?

Paramount Pictures

Maybe it’s just me, but nutrition bars you probably don’t eat seem pretty low on the list of priorities when moving your whole life to another continent. Regina was eating them for a while, and Cady said they weren’t legal in the US, so why did the Herons have so many?

11. Cady wanted Aaron to break up with Regina because she’s cheating on him…but aren’t he and Cady kinda cheating too?

Paramount Pictures

Cady wants Aaron to find out about Regina cheating on him so they’ll break up, but Cady also makes her move on Aaron while he’s still with Regina. Girl, wake up! I know she’s turning into the New Regina™️, but we need to address this!

12. Did the rest of the Plastics really think they could throw a huge party without Regina finding out?

Paramount Pictures

Okay, I’ll cut Cady some slack here because she was expecting a ~small get-together~, but c’mon, y’all! Everyone was there!

13. Cady got in trouble for the Burn Book because she’s one of only three people not in it, but did the principal ever stop to think that could be because she was the new kid?

Paramount Pictures

Karen said the Burn Book was old, and there’s no way Cady wrote the stuff in there that precedes her time at North Shore High.

14. Also, wouldn’t the handwriting give away who wrote in the Burn Book?

Paramount Pictures

The handwriting is all different, so it’s definitely more than one person, too.

15. The trust fall scene is so iconic, but also just an awful idea in general!

Paramount Pictures

Tell me this isn’t just an injury waiting to happen! I’d love to hear them explain to a parent how their kid broke their arm at school that day while attempting to crowd-surf into a bunch of angry teens. A true recipe for disaster!

16. Just. Everything about Janis and Damien’s kiss!

Paramount Pictures

17. And finally, where did Gretchen learn to speak fluent Vietnamese?

Paramount Pictures

Hearing Gretchen speaking in Vietnamese with the cool Asians at the end of the movie came so far out of left field. I have so many questions! Did she learn it growing up? Is she part Vietnamese? Did she learn it to join their clique? I need to know!
