Twitter says Candace Owens violated its policy against coronavirus misinformation

Conservative pundit Candace Owens violated Twitter’s policy against coronavirus misinformation, according to a statement obtained by the Daily Dot.

The Daily Dot is committed to filtering the noise every day as COVID-19 seizes the internet’s attention worldwide. We bring you stories on everything related to the viral pandemic, from the state response to social media fallout, and all the technical flubsemerging social trends, and disinformation in between. READ MORE ->

In the tweet, which was posted on Friday, Owens encouraged followers to violate Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s stay-at-home order, which expires on May 15.

“Apparently @GovWhitmer believes she is a duly elected dictator of a socialist country. The people of Michigan need to stand up to her. Open your businesses. Go to work. The police think she’s crazy too. They are not going to arrest 10,000,000 people for going to work,” Owens tweeted.

The tweet has since been removed.

“The Tweet violated Twitter’s COVID-19 misinformation policy, specifically around heightened-risk health claims,” a Twitter spokesperson told the Daily Dot.

Any tweet containing the “Denial of … government body recommendations to decrease an individual’s likelihood of exposure to COVID-19 with the intent to influence users into acting contrary to recommended guidance” is against its policies surrounding the pandemic, according to Twitter’s blog on its coronavirus strategy.
