CNN’s inclusion of Greta Thunberg in coronavirus town hall draws confusion

CNN included teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg in its panel for a coronavirus town hall, drawing criticism on Twitter.

Thunberg is sitting on the Coronavirus—Facts and Fears panel as a special guest, along with former CDC director Richard Besser and former Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. The panel will be hosted by Anderson Cooper and Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

CNN has not yet explained the inclusion.

Thunberg has a dedicated group of conservatives who are seemingly able to find a problem with every little thing she does, so they, of course, had something to say about CNN’s inclusion of her.

“Greta Thunberg having a remarkable career already in that as a teenager she’s now a world renowned infectious disease specialist and epidemiologist AND a leading scientific voice when it comes to global climate policy,” Donald Trump Jr. tweeted. “Just wow so impressive.

But it’s not just conservatives who are confused.

However, some folks are defending Thunberg by pointing to TV doctors such as Dr. Phil, a psychologist, and Dr. Oz, a cardiothoracic surgeon, who have weighed in on the pandemic.

“Let me see if I understand this: Dr. Oz and countless other men have been running in these cable news circuits for years spouting dangerous nonsense with few consequences, but a lot of y’all decided 17 year-old Greta Thunberg is a step too far,” Twitter user @cmclymer wrote. “And that’s not sexism? do tell.”

The CNN panel is set to air live at 8pm ET Thursday, May 14.
