There Is Simply No Cozier Movie Than “The Holiday” And I’ve Got 15 Reasons To Prove It

While rumors of a sequel to The Holiday have been stifled by Nancy Meyers herself, I say this is for the best. There is no reason to mess with perfection. Since its release in 2006, this film has become a staple watch for many over the holiday season.

It’s around this time of year that I start to wish I lived in a quaint English cottage a la Iris Simpkins. Sadly, I do not, but watching The Holiday evokes a warm, cozy feeling that I imagine is similar. Here are 15 reasons this movie is like a comforting cup of tea.

1. It’s got a stellar score by Hans Zimmer, the legendary composer known for Pirates of the Caribbean, The Dark Knight, Interstellar, Inception, and many other films with notable music. A rom-com might seem off-brand for Zimmer, but he creates one of the most beautiful, totally brill’ soundtracks I’ve ever heard.

2. It doesn’t shy away from realistic heartbreak, which makes the healing of these characters all the more rewarding. In Iris’s opening monologue, we learn that she has been pining over an old flame who is a manipulative jerk. Despite knowing he’s a bad guy, she has trouble kicking him to the curb. Eventually, Iris accepts her worth and realizes the type of love that she deserves.

3. On another continent, Amanda struggles to be vulnerable. She’s freshly single and feels like something is wrong because she won’t cry over her breakup (in her defense, he sucked). At the film’s start, Amanda feels like a “loner, loser, complicated wreck,” but eventually learns to open herself up to love.

4. Writer and director Nancy Meyers is behind masterpieces such as Father of the Bride, The Parent Trap, It’s Complicated, and Something’s Gotta Give. It’s no surprise that this film follows suit in holding her signature movie magic.

5. The cast is top-notch. Cameron Diaz and Jude Law are flawless, while Kate Winslet and Jack Black might be the most surprisingly wonderful pair this world has ever seen.

6. Despite its rom-com status, The Holiday doesn’t just depict romantic love. We also see a beautiful friendship grow between Iris and her elderly neighbor, Arthur, after a serendipitous meet-cute brings them together. It’s one of the best parts of the story.

7. Speaking of meet-cutes, thanks to Arthur, we know all about them! Anytime this man is on the screen, he steals the show. Arthur is a former screenwriter who teaches Iris and Miles about the golden age of Hollywood and some pivotal life lessons, naturally.

8. Iris Simpkins’ charming English cottage is an absolute vibe. This home is a character all on its own, from that little standalone bathtub to the adorable kitchen.

9. Lest we forget Amanda Woods’ ginormous LA mansion with an at-home movie theater and blackout curtains? Also a vibe.

10. The Holiday is the perfect seasonal movie without being too seasonal. Sure, the story takes place over the holidays, but you don’t necessarily feel like you’re entering Hallmark-Christmas-movie territory. It’s a great watch on a chilly day, but not blasphemy to have on your TV during the month of July, for instance.

11. Simply put, you can’t not love Mr. Napkin Head.

12. …or Graham’s glasses for that matter.

13. It’s full of heartwarming moments that can thaw even the iciest of souls. That tent scene when Amanda realizes Graham has deemed his little family ‘the three musketeers’ after she shared it’s what her own family once called themselves? Tears.

14. The movie follows two plotlines with four main characters before bringing both stories together at the end. It’s satisfying and utter perfection.

15. It reminds us that even when things seem hard, we never know what’s coming next. There’s something magical about the story of two women swapping houses over Christmas in hopes to escape heartbreak, only to find love again, and more importantly, find themselves.
